Why Auburn University Tweaked College Football’s Largest LED Display

From the control computer’s touchscreen, the operator can control the volume and other quality attributes of every audio signal and device on the Dante network.

“With the wide range of Dante-compatible components available on the market today—such as the Yamaha CL5 mixer, London BLU-806 and 326 processors—we’re able to create a powerful, entertaining sound presentation that beautifully complements our big-screen video experience,” he added. “By following standard networking protocol, Dante’s smart design makes complex audio over IP networking relatively simple.”

Auburn University is already planning an upgrade to its stadium’s north end zone stands, including the addition of another big-screen LED video display.

Video Takes Center Stage

To fully appreciate the audio element to Jordan-Hare Stadium audio-video system, Auburn University probably had to let its giant LED video display sink in a little bit. The school really soaked it in at the beginning of the 2015-2016 season.  “We are excited to have partnered with Daktronics in building the largest LED video display in college football,” said Auburn Director of Athletics Jay Jacobs.

“There is no place in the country like Jordan-Hare Stadium to watch a football game, and this dynamic board will revolutionize the game-day experience and make it even better. Our fans are going to be in awe the first time they see it, and they are going to really enjoy all the creative and dynamic things we will be able to do with it.”

The 57 feet high by 190 feet wide display features variable content zoning to allow for one large image to be shown on the entire display or for multiple different zones of the display to show any combination of live video, instant replays, scoring and statistics, graphics and animations, and sponsors messaging.

It’s paired with Daktronics’ Show Control system and a custom Daktronics audio system to truly elevate the game-day atmosphere for the Tigers. Show Control provides a combination of display control software, video processing, data integration and playback hardware.

“It’s exciting to continue our long-standing relationship with Auburn University by providing them with this awe-inspiring new video display,” said Daktronics CEO Reece Kurtenbach.

“The capabilities provided by a display of this size matched with Daktronics’ control system allows the university to really get creative when planning their game-day entertainment. We’re looking forward to seeing the overall presentation when the new system is fired up for their first game.”

During testing of the new video board last year, alternating flashes of blue, white, green, and red lit up portions of Auburn’s campus surrounding Jordan-Hare Stadium and could actually be seen from neighboring towns. One local news photographer tweeted he could see the glow from the new video board eight miles away.

Two ribbon displays were also installed along the seating fascia of the stadium, each measuring approximately 3.5 feet high by 435 feet wide and featuring a 15HD pixel layout. These displays work in conjunction with the main display to help brand the entire event and show additional statistics, graphics and sponsorship messages.

All of the displays feature wide-angle visibility to appeal to every fan in the stadium and low power consumption.
