The entire technology industry is based on constantly improving the way things have been done in the past. In fact, a survey of 400 IT pros found that 69% of organizations have adopted IoT solutions, or are in the process of IoT planning, within the next year.
How companies go about IoT planning is crucial.
“These are high-pressure projects; organizations that fail will be a step behind at best and, at worst, could ‘succeed’ in implementing a solution that undermines network security, overtaxes the company’s resources and/or doesn’t deliver true ROI,” according to the survey. “IoT Best Practices in 2018: The State of Internet of Things.”
“It’s alarming to think that many leaders in IT and business are planning on using yesterday’s methods to address today’s challenges.”
The following best practices can help companies close the divide between what they say they want and what they’re going to get. Specifically, these best practices will allow companies to mitigate the potential for a massive security incident and increase the odds of achieving ROI on IoT systems.
- Treat network security as a foundational consideration from the inception of the planning process, not as an afterthought.
- Do not try to implement IoT applications using only in-house resources and IT generalists. Work with one or more trusted partners/vendors with IoT expertise to drive initiatives forward effectively.
- Consider whether legacy network infrastructure — which requires manual, error-prone, and time-intensive network segmentation and policy orchestration — can really meet the needs of this fundamentally different technology.
The growing proliferation of IoT devices and mobile and in-vehicle networks points to the need to move away from a build-your-own proprietary network to a Network-as-a-Service approach instead, both to ensure increased network security and for the ability to adapt to future technologies.
