HDMI: Friend or Foe?
The promise of one simplified connection for HD video and audio seemed like an advantage for installers. But has HDMI delivered on that promise?

Being both in the PRO A/V world and residential integrations fields I pray every day that we have move away from HDMI.  It possibly is the worst designed connector ever from the physical connector’s design, and the massive strain it puts on a component, to the short distance restrictions.

As a big ProVideo junkie… I LOVE HD-SDI. I’ve been a huge fan of it for years and it is insanely easy to use. Not to mention the huge assortment of components available to use with it. See BlackMagic Design.

Great article, Mark…and so true.  I’ve been in the business for over 25 years and never did I think we’d be reduced to depending on such an awful system, such as HDMI. The president of one of the major AV switching companies recently told me that HD-SDI is about the only digital, high-def signal transport that actually does what it claims to do.  I can attest that its a breeze to work with.  If it were not for HDCP, I’d design all of my systems around it.

@ Chris and Matt, Thanks for giving your feedback.  I think the consensus about the connector for HDMI is that it is poor at best.

@Sam, Yes, HD-SDI is reliable and it works which is why broadcast uses it.

Residential and Commercial AV really got the bad end of the HDMI deal.

Thanks for the participation guys!

Collaboration: There’s No ‘I’ in MNEC

It’s misleading for a solutions provider to present itself as a “one stop shop” for mass notification emergency communication solutions. MNEC experts make a case for partnerships between integration firms and emergency solutions providers.
